Dream Ghosts

“There’s nothing that makes you so aware of the improvisation of human existence as a song unfinished. Or an old address book.” ~ Carson McCullers

All must know the frustration of leaving a part of life unfinished. Whether this be a dream once sought after, a work once started by the driving passion from within, or a task left half done and never tended to again. We all have unfinished business, half waged pursuits and beginnings left unrealized of their endings.

A life of full of sonnets half written only begs to be returned to, tended and made to exist.

By creation, we are made into this life. But, we are unfinished. We begin with new eyes fresh to the world and new ears eager to hear the sounds that life sings to us. Then, we begin to learn of our soul, of our spirit, of who we are and what we want to give to our world. This is our true beginning, the first footstep along our journey, this journey that lasts our entire lives.

In knowing this, we should never become static. Nor should we leave our pursuits stale, without being fruited. We are here to finish things.

Being a writer and artist I know all too well the trials of beginning things only to leave them sitting for ages. Many works I’ve begun and have left for dust to settle upon. This is never my intention. But, as the world turns, so turns life. In doing so, things take the place of other things for a moment, or for an extended period of time.

But my pursuits have always been started in full attempts, full of drive, full of passion and looking forward to the achievement of a goal, many of which have come to fruition while others still remain waiting, eager to meet the universe with full splendor, full of the life that I can give them.

Now older, I make it a point to finish what I start. But this was a painful lesson to learn.

When we leave our dreams sitting covered with dust, half filled, half started, we only half live. We only begin to begin again, never finishing what we set out to achieve. We leave lifeless dream ghosts scattered about our world, breathless and suffocated without our hearts to move them into existence.

With our dream ghosts as our neighbors, we only live with unfilled ideas, with dreams of tomorrow that only exist in our minds. We walk among a graveyard of unfinished endeavor, littered with hope and void of diligent action. We wish for these things, but never act further than a modest beginning.

To our dream beginnings, we must all return.

We owe our dreams a place in our life, a place in the world. We owe them a pedestal to sit upon, for others to share of their light. We owe ourselves the duty of acting upon these passions with full intention, with full action until life sparks, and lives within them.

Many people wonder wonder what this or that would be like to achieve, myself included. But many people only wonder, never setting the spark to the tinder, never fanning the flame of desire into the wildfire of reality. This is tragic in all forms, for what is life truly for if not to pursue our passions with all of our hearts and to share them with the world.

We are all here to finish what we start. We are here to live and love as fully as possible, to learn and grow toward the center of love once again, to find our way back home to the source of this love, to the source of all creation.

We should all look back at our half finished work, to our dream ghosts that still linger among our hearts and minds. We should give them a chance to live among us, to shine as bright as they did when they were but simple thought-forms, without shape but full of color, full of pure beauty, pure truth.

The world is full of this simple beauty, adding to it will only make it brighter.

Finish what you start, and let your dreams live.

  1. You are a wise young man. You remind us of an important thing…finish what you begin. Keep your dreams alive. I am older in years than spirit. It happens to us all. But as a writer, i thought, if i don’t finish my many writings, no one will. I care. Even if no one reads what ive written. You are in the heartsphere.

    1. Thank you for your kind words.. And keep writing! You have a voice that needs to be expressed and heard, otherwise you wouldn’t bother in my opinion.. All the best to you!

  2. We can be at this cross-road, that you write about, every single moment once we cross and enter our mid-lives…..my own blog of Palmystry is one of the Dream Ghost……I started to finally pen down but now it is just another page I wrote in my life……haunting me and reminding me of my very own ghostly self from those years…….

    Well thought, Well Written

  3. I love your post!
A damn good reminder to all of us. We are here for a reason. If you have found your reason – own it, live it, love it, and finish it. If only we didn’t have societies preconceived ideals of how we should live – aka: Get up, work, pay bills, die. Oh, and somewhere in there you should probably reproduce.
Great blog – keep up the awesome work 🙂

  4. Love the phrase “dream ghosts” – captures ambitions that have long since died and turned to dust. Lovely post, inspirational yet somehow sad for me…

    1. Thank you.. I’m actually glad that this post evokes emotion for you. It did the same for me when writing it, because Lord knows I have several things that I wished I was able to finish, but sadly those options aren’t available to me anymore. Hope all is well! 🙂
