Express Yourself

In all forms of art we find truth. Where does this truth come from? I believe it comes from within.

We find this in a painting, a sculpture, in a dance, in movies and in writing. Within the arts we find pictures of human experience; these are exquisite expressions of the spirit. The goal of any artful expression is to tap the vein of human and spiritual connectivity. The artist wants to move your soul; to make the spirit sing. Here in the sphere of expression, we find the many wonders of human experience; we find our inner voice.

Of all arts, I find the most moving pieces within the written word, poetry and on the stage. Granted, a painting can draw forth emotion and passion; a dance can invigorate the soul, and generate emotion that is felt physiologically. But when the spirit is spoken to directly, it listens, and this is felt throughout your entire being.

We must allow ourselves to feel this power of spirit; to hear its voice when it speaks. We should strive to inspire each other; nurture expression and allow each other to dream and imagine wonderful things.

The passion of the human being comes from engaging the spirit, and listening to the heart. In our expressive arts we find love, hate, struggle, bliss, heaven, justice, drama and endless possibility. These are all parts of our natural world that the spirit interprets silently, and strives to express for all to hear its voice. We should be wise to listen carefully when the spirit speaks.

Experience draws the picture, the spirit adds color and depth. The body learns the dance, but the soul makes it come alive. The writer scribes what the spirit speaks, and the poet pens the spirit’s voice.

When a deep connection has been felt by an observer of art, a partner in dance or by a reader of words, then the spirit has been heard. The love and expression is then felt, and hopefully spreads for all to enjoy.

We are spirits of expression. We speak to each other through an artful language. As we travel within this sphere, we should all pick up the brush and touch the canvas; we should all join in the dance or pick up the pen. We all can paint, write or dance in our own beautiful way, and we all interpret differently. This is the flavor of life.

Attune yourself to the spirit’s voice. Look upon its expression with the heart. It speaks a truth, and whispers a dream that you already know.

  1. Through the written word, the reader has to create their own images, physiological responses, movements, actions, thoughts. Nothing is served up on a plate. Someone recently commented on one of my poems and had given it a completely different interpretation to the one I had in mind when writing… And that was the magic of the piece. A reader takes your one story and turns it into a thousand, each finding their own spirit in it. Wonderful!

    1. Yes! Thats the best part about it. In each interpretation there is a truth to be witnessed. Art speaks differently to all, which is why it is so profound and beautiful. 🙂

  2. That is right! You can find so many feelings, emotions within. But what happens when the soul is dried out and u can not find beauty in anything?!

    1. Very artful in itself as well. I live on a river and fly fish often from the shore and from my canoe. The technique itself is a form of expression and very relaxing as well.

  3. So true! What we see in the art of others is the truest reflection of our inner selves and when we tap into that part of ourselves we see our most authentic spirits. Great post!

  4. I needed this today. . . .thanks! Just to let you know that your article makes me feel good just to read and feel the words. Have a great evening!

  5. yes for me for certain it is so relaxing and enjoyable, if I catch a little trout it is a bonus that puts an extra smile on my face. Thanks for sharing your inspirational thoughts. I very much enjoy your posts.

    1. So, since I nominated you a couple days after you had already accepted the inpiring blog award no hard feelings if you don’t go through the whole thing again… 🙂 But I do think it’s good to let you know that your work is appreciated. I’ll be watching for that e-book. Have a good one!

  6. dig down deep,
    grab some paint,
splatter it against the wall ….

it can be as easy as 1,2,3 …. a,b,c ….
or a little more complex depending upon
the current circumstances on hand, in mind ….

  9. Reblogged this on whatevertheyaint and commented:
This is so beautifully written. Who WOULDN’T be inspired to express themselves after reading this? Just do it-paint, sing, write, dance, act, sculpt, draw, create!

  10. Exceptional thought and expression through this post. I couldn’t agree more that art in all its forms speaks to us and through us. A single artistic expression can mean so many different things to different people, which I believe is what makes it so amazing. Also, as you say, we all have the ability to be “artists” – we just need to get up and do it.

  11. Felt wonderful reading this particular post…
Every piece of art is something that arises from the artist’s heart- inner self, it flourishes- it travels, whether noticed or unnoticed and then finally, it sprints back to the artist’s heart, enriching it with even more of love and compassion.
Art- the language of art is the most precious thing which is residing in each and every soul- so, this world would be even more furnished with beauty once everyone let this language be spoken through their artistic pieces.

  12. This is great! It seems your thoughts are my thoughts. I wrote something very similar about writing. (I haven’t posted it yet, but it is coming.) This is fantastic! Thank you for sharing.

  13. This is very lovely. It’s true that we all have something wonderful to offer. It’s a lesson for us also be be open to accepting the artisitic gifts that others offer to us. Thanks.
